US DOT Traffic Camera Statistics
No agency publishes a national count of DOT road cameras, so we built one. As of November 4, 2026, this directory tracks 23,880 active official DOT road cameras across 21 states, published by 22 state DOT and 511 systems, plus 1,167 FAA aviation weather cameras counted separately, which add 14 more states (25,047 feeds in all from 23 public agencies), and we verify every feed with our own rolling HTTP checks. These are monitoring webcams, not speed or red-light enforcement cameras. Every number on this page is measured from the feeds themselves, not quoted from anyone else.

How many DOT road cameras are in the US?
At least 23,880. That is every road camera the 22 state DOT and 511 systems in this directory publish that we have verified ourselves, and it is a floor rather than a total: states we have not yet added would push the real number higher. The 1,167 FAA aviation weather cameras we also track are federal and sit at airstrips and lookouts, so they are counted separately. No government body publishes a national figure, so a verified count of what the agencies themselves publish is the closest thing that exists.

Ranked by fleet size. Some state DOTs publish cameras through a direct API, others through their official 511 traveler-information platform; both are the state's own network.

Traffic cameras by state
Camera counts cover every feed we track in the state, including federal and other non-DOT public sources. A small count means we have not added that state's DOT network yet, not that the state runs few cameras. These numbers grow as we add networks. Live share appears only where the fleet is big enough and our checker can reliably measure it; for the rest we show the count and withhold the percentage rather than publish a number we do not trust.

Where these numbers come from
- Every camera in the count comes from an official public source: a state DOT, a 511 traveler-information system, or a federal program. We do not count private or unofficial cameras.
- Counts include only active cameras. Retired and delisted feeds leave the day they are removed. A camera with no live picture for 30 days also leaves, and counts again within the hour after it next answers. A camera added in the last 30 days counts while it waits for its first picture.
- Every feed is health-checked on a rolling schedule around the clock, which is how the live-share figures are measured. Full methodology on the camera uptime report.
- The total is a floor, not a ceiling: states and agencies we have not yet added are missing from it, so the true national number is higher.
- This page regenerates continuously from the live database; there is no annual snapshot to go stale.
How many traffic cameras are in the US, counting every type?
Nobody can say, because "traffic camera" covers several unrelated systems and only one of them is publicly countable:
- DOT road-monitoring webcams, the kind on this page: 25,047 tracked and verified here, with public image or video feeds anyone can check.
- Enforcement cameras (speed and red-light): no public feeds exist, so no one outside the operating agencies can count the devices. GHSA tracks which states permit them and IIHS lists the communities running programs, but those are law and program tallies, not camera counts.
- City traffic-management cameras, operated by municipal traffic departments: some cities publish feeds, most do not, and no central inventory exists.
So any single "total traffic cameras in the US" figure you see is either one of these categories or a guess. The number on this page is the measurable one.
